Improvement, Continuity and Sustainability Group

The Improvement, Continuity and Sustainability Group drives process improvements and builds organisational resilience for both the immediate and the longer term. Cross-functional experts support the CERN community and ensure public trust in the Organization by establishing a culture of continuous improvement and by openly communicating CERN’s sustainability actions. Further, by creating a centrally integrated resource for risk, crisis management and business continuity, the Group consolidates, clarifies and advances CERN’s activities in these domains. ICS collaborates closely with all departments across CERN and seeks continuous feedback and dialogue.

The OSI-ICS Group covers three distinct areas:

Continuous Improvement
A team of cross-functional experts drives the establishment of a culture of continuous improvement and supports the CERN community in the process. Working closely with the CERN Management Board and taking CERN’s strategic objectives and priorities into account, ICS will identify concrete value-driven improvement projects, develop and implement pilots for them and monitor the efficiency gains achieved. To this end, it will collaborate closely with the LEAN* experts in OSI-SMS and leverage the technical expertise available across CERN for the purposes of transversal projects. In addition, it intends to launch an education and communication campaign to raise awareness of the importance of continuous improvement at CERN.

Organisational Resilience
ICS will bring together CERN’s risk management, crisis management and business continuity expertise and resources in one place to ensure the streamlined and effective implementation of an organisational resilience framework. Existing implementation strategies will be aligned with each other, then reviewed against Host State requirements and benchmarked against other organisations’ best practices and international standards. To increase awareness and to reassure the CERN community as well as the Member States, the unified organisational resilience framework will be publicly communicated.

Sustainability Office
The new Sustainability Office will initially focus on expanding CERN’s existing environmental actions into a comprehensive sustainability (“ESG”) strategy, integrating the Social and Governance pillars aligned with international best practices and standards. This will ensure alignment with CERN’s mission and values, and coherence with the Organization’s strategic priorities and the expectations of our Member States. The Office will coordinate CERN’s ESG activities in collaboration with all other CERN departments, most notably HSE, which has responsibility for the Environment (E) pillar. Efforts will be disseminated through regular sustainability reports and targeted communications, to foster internal engagement and enhance public trust and awareness.
